15.00 - 16.00 | ALTMARKTgarten Oberhausen

Urban agriculture: ALTMARKTgarten Oberhausen lighthouse

How can we feed around ten billion people in the future? The land available for growing food is limited, climate change is forcing us to save water, reduce CO2, avoid pesticides and minimise transport routes. The solution: building-integrated agriculture. This involves creating areas for growing fruit and vegetables in urban areas.

The ALTMARKTgarten was opened on the roof of the job centre in Oberhausen in 2019. With the inFARMING® concept, Fraunhofer UMSICHT has developed a promising approach for the future of food.

The ALTMARKTgarten in Oberhausen is a real-life laboratory. Herbs, lettuces and strawberries grow on 1,100 square metres and are horticulturally managed by Exner Grüne Innovation. 160 square metres are reserved for Fraunhofer UMSICHT research.
